What We Believe

St John’s is an Evangelical Anglican church in the Diocese of Southwark. Below is a brief summary of what we believe.

We are a Christian church

As Christians, we trust in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross for our forgiveness, and in his resurrection as the grounds for our future hope. We believe in the Bible as God’s word, and the Nicene and Apostles’ creeds as helpful summaries of Biblical truth.

As a group of people in 21st Century London, we stand in a historic line of Christians stretching across 2000 years, and side-by-side with fellow Christians around the world. We are united by our common faith in Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

We are an evangelical church

We believe the Bible is God’s word – the ultimate authority for Christian life and teaching, by which God speaks to and directs his church in every age. The Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit, who continues to empower its message today.

God’s word centres on Jesus Christ, and most of all his death and resurrection, by which God rescues people for himself and renews creation. It is through the Bible that we come to know Jesus, thanks to the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We strive to point others to the unique glory of our unique Saviour, Jesus Christ, by sharing his Gospel.

We are an Anglican church

As a church we are shaped by Anglican convictions in our doctrine, tradition and practice. Our clergy and team hold to the doctrines summarised in the 39 Articles of Religion, The Homilies and The Book of Common Prayer.
