What is the true meaning of Christmas?

It's that time again where we are in the festive season as Christmas is approaching. This time of year is often associated with family, community and famously- food! However, with all these different associations, we often get lost in the commercialisation of Christmas and forget the real reason for the season. So, to help keep the real meaning of Christmas at the focus, here is a post to break down and remind you of the true meaning of the Christmas season.

What is the true meaning of Christmas about?

Christmas is truly about honouring the birth of Jesus Christ. This birth is significant because it signals the entering of the Prince of Peace (Jesus Christ) entering the world. This same Jesus later saved the world so that humanity can have a relationship with God and our sins could be forgiven (John 3: 16). Before this, there were Jewish traditions, like slaughtering animals, to cover an individual's sins. However, this was not enough. It was only a temporary act until Christ provided the ultimate sacrifice- His life. Only Christ's sacrifice was enough to cover the sins of the world.

Christ was born to a virgin woman by the name of Mary. However, Joseph played the role of Jesus' dad, once he had entered the world. Jesus was born in a humble manger, which again highlights his character of humility, considering that He is God incarnate.

Was Jesus really born on December 25th?

There is no proof to show that Jesus was really born exactly on December 25th. However, it is a day to acknowledge and celebrate the significance of Jesus entering the world. It is a celebration of the Prince of Peace entering the world, as this is what believers were waiting for.

What scriptures can remind us of the true meaning of Christmas?

Isaiah 9:6 - For to us a child is born, to us, a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Philippians 2:8-10 - And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

Matthew 1:21 - She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

How can I accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour into my life?

If you want God to forgive your sins and have a real relationship with Him, the Holy Bible says you must believe in your heart and confess your sins to be saved (Romans 10:9). You can say this prayer with your heart to be born again to begin a new life with Jesus:

Dear Lord Jesus,

I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life; I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior.
